Adding Inventory Items Using the Items Wizard
The I/C Items Wizard is the simplest way to set up items in your Inventory Control system. It streamlines the process by stepping you through all the tasks involved in adding items and related records. More...
You can also use the Items Wizard to change information for existing inventory items.
Note: You can also use the Items screen to add the basic item record, and then add other information later. (See I/C Items Screen for more information.)
Make sure that you have each of the following types of records for the
inventory items that you want to add:
- Account sets for posting transactions to general ledger accounts. (See I/C Account Sets Screen for more information.)
- Item categories to group your inventory items. (See I/C Categories Screen,for more information.)
- Item number structures. (See I/C Item Structures Screen for more information.)
- Item number segment codes to control the item numbers the program allows to be entered. (See I/C Segment Codes Screen for more information.)
- Inventory locations. (See I/C Locations Screen for more information.)
- Price list codes to vary your basic item prices and to provide international prices. (See I/C Price List Codes Screen for more information.)
- Units of measure for stocking and pricing inventory items, required if you selected the Only Use Defined UOM option in the I/C Options screen. (See I/C Units of Measure Screen for more information.)
- Weight units of measure used to determine shipment weights (required if you want to show order weights in Order Entry). (See I/C Weight Units of Measure Screen for more information.)
- If you want to include additional information in your item records, add optional fields for inventory items in Common Services, and then assign them to Inventory items in the I/C Optional Fields screen. (You can also add optional fields to item records at a later time.)
- Add the taxing authorities and tax classes you require (using the Tax Services icon in Common Services).
If you use Serialized Inventory and Lot Tracking, you should also set up the following records:
- Serial and lot number mask structures to format serial and lot numbers. (See I/C Mask Structures Screen for more information.)
- Warranty Codes to identify the warranties you provide to customers who purchase serialized or lotted items. (See I/C Warranty Codes Screen for more information.)
- Contract Codes to identify the quality assurances vendors provide you on the serialized and lotted items you purchase. (See I/C Contract Codes Screen for more information.)
To add inventory items using the Items Wizard:

Inventory Control > I/C Items and Price Lists > Items Wizard.
- Click Next to move to the first item information page.
- Beside the Item Number field, click the New button, and then enter a code for the item that you are adding.
You can enter the number directly, or click the Zoom
button to use the Construct Item Number screen.
Tip: To make sure that the item number matches the structure code you plan to use to format the item number, use the Construct Item Number screen.
- Continue filling in the
fields on the first page of the Items Wizard.
Tip: Use the Finder
beside a field (where available) to see a list of the choices for the field.
- When
you have finished filling in the fields on a page, click Next to
move to the next page.
If you have to leave the wizard while adding an item, click Done or Cancel.
If you click Cancel, the Wizard asks you whether to save your entries.
The next time you start the Items Wizard, you can continue by entering the same Item Number, and then clicking Next until you reach the point where you saved your work.
Note: The Done button appears on the 4th wizard page, unless you use Serialized Inventory and Lot Tracking.
- After you finish entering
the required information for
the item record, click Done or Finish.
The Finish button appears after you complete the last wizard page for the item.
Tip: If you just want to add basic item information, you can click Done to add the inventory item. You can add more item information later by selecting the item number in the Items Wizard, or by using the other screens in the Items And Price Lists folder.
