Create and Set Up an Oracle Database

Overview

Because Oracle database joins must be within the same database, a single Oracle database must contain the system database as well as all company databases that use the system database.

You use Oracle user names to identify the separate system and company database tables.

You use Oracle user names to identify company database tables.

After installing Oracle on the server (version 7 or later), set up the server as follows:

  1. Create a database to hold all your accounting data.
  2. Create one user (for example, SAMSYS), with a password, for the Sage 300 system database.
  3. Create one user (for example, SAMLTD), with a password, for each Sage 300 company database that uses the system database.
  4. Create one user (for example, SAMLTD), with a password, for each Sage 300 company database.

To set up an Oracle client:

  1. Install an Oracle client on the workstation, and then test the connection to the server.
  2. Create one Oracle ODBC data source for the system data.
  3. Create an additional data source for each company's data.

Each of the ODBC data sources should point to the database you created for holding accounting data.

  4. Using the Sage 300 Database Setup program, set up the system database.
  5. Create a data source for each company's data.

Each of the ODBC data sources should point to the database you created for holding accounting data.

  6. For each company residing on the Oracle server, set up a company database.
