Optimizing Item Reorder Quantities

Use the Optimize Inventory screen to optimize minimum and maximum quantities for item reorder. Using sales data, Sage 300 calculates optimal item reorder quantities based on a just-in-time inventory management model. You can select some or all of the recommended changes, and then automatically update the quantities specified on the Reorder Quantities screen.

Note: Reorder quantities for an item are not updated if All Locations is selected for the item in the Reorder for field on the Reorder Quantities screen.

  • Specify settings and options on the Optimizer tab of the Options screen. For more information, see I/C Options Screen.
  • On the Items screen, select the Seasonal option for each seasonal item you stock. For more information, see I/C Items Screen.
  • If you use Sage 300 Purchase Orders to create purchase orders automatically based on reorder quantities defined in Inventory Control, ensure that items on the Reorder Quantities screen have a full year's set of periods: 12 (or 13, if you use 13 fiscal periods). If you use the Optimize Inventory screen to update reorder quantities for an item that does not have a full year's set of periods, when you create purchase orders for that item, projected sales quantities may be incorrect.

To optimize item reorder quantities:

  1. Open Inventory Control > I/C Items and Price Lists > Optimize Inventory.

  2. In the Specify Criteria section, enter search criteria to find items for which you want to optimize reorder quantities.

    Note: By default, the Year/Period field displays the current fiscal year and period. To ensure that optimal item reorder quantities are calculated correctly, you should not change this default.

  3. Click Go Go button.

    Results appear in the table matching the search criteria you specified.

    Note: After you click Go Go button, the fields in the Specify Criteria section can no longer be changed. And even if you close the screen, the information shown on the screen is saved, allowing you to later resume working where you stopped. This can be helpful if you are reviewing a long list of items, and you cannot finish at one time. To enter new criteria, you must click Clear.

  4. Review the table for recommended changes to your current item reorder quantities.

    Tip: You can change the quantities in the Order Minimum and Order Maximum fields.

  5. Select each row that contains changes you want to make to item reorder quantities.
  6. Click Apply Selected Changes.

    Minimum and maximum item reorder quantities are changed to the order minimum and order maximum displayed in the rows you selected, and the rows are removed from the table.

    Note: If the Update Location Details option is selected on the Options screen, the Inventory Minimum (SIA) field on the Location Details screen is also changed to the order minimum.
