Assigning Units of Measure to Items
If your Inventory Control system has the Use Only Defined UOM option selected (on the Processing tab of the I/C Options screen), items can only use units of measure that exist on the I/C Units of Measure screen.
Therefore, assigning a unit of measure (UOM) to an item can involve two steps:
- Adding a new unit of measure and conversion factor to Inventory Control.
- Assigning units of measure to the inventory item.

- See which units are already defined for your company by viewing the I/C Units of Measure screen.
- Decide what to call each of the new units of measure. These names appear on data entry screens.
- Decide on your stocking
units for each inventory item.
Note: If the Allow Fractional Quantities option is not selected (on the Processing tab of the I/C Options screen), the stocking unit is the smallest unit of measure used for shipping or selling the item.
- Calculate the conversion factors between the stocking unit of measure and additional units.
To add a unit of measure to Inventory Control:
-
Inventory Control > I/C Setup > Units of Measure.
- In the I/C Units of Measure screen, click Add Line to add a new line to the table.
- In the Unit of Measure column, type the unit of measure (no more than ten characters) as you want it to appear on data entry screens. For example, each, dozen, or box.
- In the Default Conversion Factor column, type the factor for converting this UOM to the item stocking unit. For example, if “each” is a stocking UOM (with a conversion factor of 1), the conversion factor for “dozen” would be 12.
- Click Save.
To add units of measure to an existing item:
-
Inventory Control > I/C Items and Price Lists > Items.
- In the I/C Items screen, enter the item number of the item, or click
and select the item.
- Click the Units tab.
- Click Add Line to add a new line to the table.
- In the Unit of Measure column, type the UOM or click
and select an existing UOM.
- In the Conversion Factor column, verify the factor for converting this unit to the item stocking unit; you can change the conversion factor if necessary.
- If this unit is to be the stocking UOM, select Yes in the Stocking Unit of Measure column. If another UOM is currently selected as the stocking unit of measure, select No in the column for that UOM.
- Repeat steps 4-7 for each UOM to associate with this item.
- When you are finished, click Save.

Print the I/C Item Status report to check the information entered for the item in the I/C Items screen.
